This is the complete story of how my son, Maurice, is now permanently disabled from taking the Flu Shot here in San Antonio, TX.
Maurice was always very loving, thoughtful, smart, and helpful and a truly friendly little boy. I could go on and on with kind words to describe him. I remember the first day I dropped him off at kindergarten he was never afraid and just smiled at me and gave me a kiss and told me bye. We would always love to sing songs together and he loved to show me his "dance moves". He was always like a true angel sent from Heaven. I will never forget the day I went to pick him up early from school to take him to get the Flu Shot.
He was doing art work and I remember him being upset that he had to leave early that day. We drove to the Wic clinic and I gave him some Motrin because I knew he would be uncomfortable after the Vaccine. When they gave Maurice the Shot I remember him screaming very loud and he said "mommy that hurt really bad." and I said "well it is all over now - don't worry sweetheart." He started running a fever that night, which I just thought was normal after vaccines, and I was giving him Motrin and Tylenol for the discomfort.
Two days later he still wasn't feeling better so I took him to his pediatrician who said oh don't worry in a few days he will be trick or treating because it was close to Halloween time. When we got home Maurice was sitting on our bed and I was giving him some medicine and I said I will be right back , I'm going to get you some water from the kitchen and he said ok mommy and little did I know that those would be the last words I would hear him speak to me. When I walked back in to the bedroom with the water Maurice's eyes had rolled back in his head, he was stiff like a board and a little drool was coming from his mouth. I didn't know it then but this was his first seizure that was happening.
I picked him up and ran outside to my dad and was screaming that we have to get him to the hospital. Once he got to the hospital he started having constant seizures and then his brain started swelling out of control. He was on Life Support 40 days and nights. He had to have a brain biopsy done and a drain placed into his brain to drain fluid from all of the swelling. I spent the night with him every night and my dad was also there every day. The doctors had to almost freeze his body to keep his brain from swelling anymore and they kept the temperature of the Intensive Care Room very cold.
They moved the nurse’s desk right up to the door of his room and told me that I only had a few minutes left with my son. He passed away three times and every time he would come back they would tell me " I don't know how this little boy keeps coming back." and I knew it was that God was not ready for him to go. I kept having pastors come up to pray with him and I went and got some holy water blessed from a Church and would pray over him with it and hold his hand and tell him how much I Love him.
He finally made it through and was transferred to a Rehab. Facility and the doctors told me they didn't know how much he would be able to recover. He now can't talk anymore, he now has epilepsy, I have to puree his food in a blender before feeding it to him because he can't chew anymore, he is now in pull-ups, he is completely dependent on adults now for feeding, bathing, grooming, etc. , he can't control his emotions or impulses anymore which they have him on a anti-psychotic agent medicine to control this, he has no safety awareness , he can not blow his nose or imitate any mouth movements such as whistling, and other problems as well now.
He is walking again and he does understand what you say to him and he will point to things that he wants. He will cry a lot sometimes and I tell him Maurice, God and Jesus are still healing you and he will clap his hands and point to the sky. He can sometimes follow simple commands such as turn on the light or bring me that paper with repeating it to him a few times. He will also sometimes give you the thumbs up sign.
He has had a lot of psychological testing’s from schools and independent psychologists who say his self help skills is like a 8 month old baby, his social skills is like a 18 month old baby, his communication skills is like a 12 month old baby, physical is like a 16 month old baby and academic is like a 20 month old baby. They say he has very severe neuron cognitive deficits, dementia, complete dependence on adults, psychosocial deficits, interruption of developmental process, severe difficulties in school/social functioning, and no usable language, functionally non-communicative And has emotional/behavioral problems, is at the Extreme Low Range of intellectual abilities and is functioning on a mentally retarded level, all secondary to reaction to influenza vaccine, and causing a TBI (traumatic brain injury.)
I have to give him almost 900 pills a month now for his epilepsy, emotion disorder and for also being able to sleep at night. If he doesn't have the sleeping medication at night his brain will keep him up all night and he will scream and run around all night. I also wanted to add how I am a single mother with 4 children and how it is so hard just trying to survive on his monthly SSI check. I wanted to tell people that a shot that was supposed to help my son almost took his life and completely changed it forever.
I just want people to know the risks and dangers associated with the Flu Shot so they can make an informed decision on whether or not to give it to their child. Hopefully Maurice's story can save another mother or family from going through all of this pain and agony. On a hospital record they listed that Maurice had Encephalitis (brain swelling), Acute Respiratory Failure , Convulsions (seizures), Encephalopathy , Increased Intracranial Pressure, Ventriculostomy, Insertion of Endotracheal tube, spinal tap, brain biopsy , ICP drain and continuous mechanical ventilation(life support) all while in the Intensive Care Unit. I wake up every morning wondering if I will ever hear Maurice talk to me again and just wishing he would have never of taken that Flu Shot.
I also have medical records and letters from 2 treating physicians saying that it was the Flu Shot and numerous pictures of him in therapy and even in the Intensive Care Unit which are really horrible to look at but really show everything he went through.
